If you follow any breastfeeding or parenting groups on Facebook you’ve probably seen the Tree of Life breastfeeding pictures by now. I’m not usually one to jump on bandwagons, but I couldn’t resist this one.
The idea was started by Cassandra E, a mum from California, US, who posted a photo to a breastfeeding support group of herself nursing her 13 month old with a tree of life connecting them. Here is Cassandra’s original picture (published here with permission):
Cassandra’s idea took off and now thousands of nursing mums have created tree of life nursing art and posted them to social media using the hashtags #TreeOfLife #NormaliseBreastfeeding and #NormalizeBreastfeeding.

The trend is bringing mothers together in a public display of solidarity and support for breastfeeding. Many women have spent hours creating the art for other mothers. I posted my photo to a breastfeeding group and within minutes had 12 tree of life images lovingly created for me by mothers I have never met. In just three days Cassandra has created over 500 images for other mothers. Cassandra has set up an Instagram account to share some of the images she has created. Find her on Instagram at @keeponboobin.
The photos are a beautiful symbol of the importance of breastfeeding, representing life’s journey and the sacred bond between a mother and her nursing child.
